Education Scholarship

As academic physicians, it is our responsibility to examine what and how we teach and contribute to the larger understanding of medical education. 

The Educational Scholarship portfolio was established in 2009 to “foster an environment that advances scholarship and innovation in education with national and international impact”.  The Director, Dr. Tina Martimianakis provides leadership and mentorship in research in medical education research and supports scholarly teaching, educational development, and innovation across the Department. Victoria Moreno is the Program Coordinator of the Office of Medical Education Scholarship, providing administrative and project coordinating support to the portfolio. 

The Department of Paediatrics believes that education underpins excellent clinical practice and research. Our training programs are internationally renowned, a testament to the dedication and talent of our teachers, educators, and education leaders. 

Since the establishment of the portfolio several initiatives, outlined below, have been developed to meet strategic priority goals for education in the Department.

Dr. Maria Athina (Tina) Martimianakis is a Professor and Director of Medical Education Scholarship in the Department of Paediatrics, and a Scientist and Associate Director of Collaborations and Partnerships, at Wilson Centre, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. She joined the Department in 2009. 

She holds a Master's in Political Science, from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Master's in Education with a focus on health professional education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE/UT), where she also completed a Doctorate in Higher Education.  

Tina’s research aims to elaborate on governmentality effects: the ways in which dominant discourses impact professional identity negotiations, particularly the articulation and application of expertise. She thus studies the material effects of discourse as a particular dimension of the hidden curriculum with the potential to support or hinder educational delivery and learning. Tina is also interested in ways in which organizations and educational programs may inadvertently create the conditions for knowledge stratification. She thus studies how discourses manifest formally and informally and influence the value systems that academic healthcare providers, learners, and patients bring to their interactions. Entry points for this work are discourses, such as collaboration, humanism, integration, caring, and globalization. 

Her educational practice is closely aligned with her research program. As an educator, Tina employs critical and social-cultural pedagogies to develop programming to address hidden curriculum effects and to enable health professionals to incorporate complex negotiations of the social world in their educational planning and implementation.  

Tina works with educational leaders in the Department of Paediatrics and across the Faculty of Medicine to enhance educational scholarship, and to contribute to efforts to improve the learning environment with policy and curriculum interventions.

Victoria Moreno has had vast experience in organizational management as the former owner and Operations Manager for the Toronto Women’s Bookstore, the General Manager of the Spanish Centre for Language and Culture, Director of Student Care for the Canadian College of Business and Computers, as well as the Found/Co-Director of ESH Language Centre (now Quest Language Studies). She has been actively involved in community services with not-for-profits, completing a six-year term on the Board of Women’s Health in Women’s Hands in October of 2020, served on The 519 Community Centre Resources Development and Communication Committee, and was a volunteer registrar for Sistema Toronto. 

Education Scholarship Enhancement Committee (ESEC)

Overview

The Educational Scholarship Enhancement Committee (ESEC) was established in March 2009. ESEC is chaired by Dr. Martimianakis and includes membership from the SickKids Learning Institute, The Wilson Centre for Research in Education, and the Department of Paediatrics educator group. The committee is made up of education scientists and clinical educators. Members have expertise in educational development, research methodologies, program development and evaluation, pedagogy/teaching, faculty development and mentoring. They are a highly motivated group invested in enhancing educational scholarship in the Department of Paediatrics.

Master of Science in Community Health in Health Practitioner Teacher Education

The MScCH degree in HPTE is a professional graduate degree program in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health offered through the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. This unique graduate studies program addresses a critical faculty development need in the health professions. The program prepares practicing clinicians for educational leadership roles. Courses focus on practical skills clinicians need to teach, design and lead educational programs. Two core courses in Public Health expose students to system and policy issues important in their roles as clinicians and educators, and electives allow learners to explore their interests. The objective of the program is to prepare prospective and established health professions faculty to become effective teachers, scholars and leaders. Emphasis is on a broad understanding of factors affecting health care education and the philosophical principles and practical applications in clinical training programs, design and administration.

PhD Program in Health Professions Education Research

The Health Professions Education Research (HPER) doctoral concentration is offered by the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME), Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto, in collaboration with the faculty of the Wilson Centre, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, at UHN.

Fulltime and Flex-time options are available. Applicants with an MD degree and research experience may qualify for direct entry.

The core curriculum of this unique doctoral program will focus on the multidisciplinary research needed to advance and transform health professions education and practice and promote creative synergies between theory, practice and diverse methodologies. The doctoral program draws students from the health, natural and social sciences and humanities with an interest in health professions education.

Funded by the Education Deans, the Education Development Fund (EDF) is intended to support new and innovative projects that align with our Faculty’s strategic priorities in education. The EDF is a seed fund designed to encourage those who are transitioning to, or are newly engaged in, education scholarship to further their career development. 

We would be happy to support those of you that are considering applying for EDF funds. 

 As matched funding is limited, our Department has an internal peer review process set up for interested applicants to compete.  All submissions from the Department of Paediatrics must compete in the internal competition and receive endorsement from the Chair of Paediatrics or their designate. Please note, that only proposals that meet the criteria for matched funds will be sent forward to the EDF competition. 

We will review to ensure that eligibility requirements are met. When submitting your proposal for internal review, please follow the format and guidelines of the EDF application.  To support your grant writing, all project/research teams of qualifying proposals will also receive feedback for improving their proposals prior to submission to the EDF.

Medical Education Day

The Office of Medical Education Scholarship oversees the annual Medical Education Day - a Department of Pediatrics conference which takes place each year. The goals are to promote trainee and faculty interest in teaching and education, assist faculty in the development of their roles as teachers and educators, highlight research activities in Medical Education and to foster interest in educational scholarship among members of the Department of Paediatrics. A keynote speaker is invited to present on a topic related to education scholarship at Paediatric Grand rounds and lead a subsequent workshop. The day concludes with faculty presenting their research and scholarship in Medical Education.
