Dr. Annie Huang, Associate Chair (Research)

Dr. Annie Huang is a neurooncologist and senior scientist in the Cell Biology program and the Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre at SickKids Hospital, and is a Professor of Paediatrics, Medical Biophysics, Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto. She holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in rare childhood brain tumors and is considered a leading clinical expert and researcher in rare and very high-risk infant brain tumors including ATRTs, ETMRs and Pineoblastoma. She is passionate about mentorship and exploiting new science to transform pediatric medicine. She has been very active in mentoring the continuum of next generation scientists, academic pediatricians and clinician-scientists at SickKids, the University of Toronto and through her various roles in national and international organizations.

Dr. James Dowling, Director, Basic/Translational Track

Dr. James Dowling is paediatric neurologist and senior scientist in the Genetics & Genome Biology research program at The Hospital for Sick Children's Research Institute, and a Professor of Paediatrics and Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto. He is a clinical expert in childhood neuromuscular disorders and is considered a lead authority on the diagnosis and management of congenital myopathies. His laboratory focuses on gene discovery and therapeutics for rare congenital myopathies and childhood muscular dystrophies. Dr. Dowling is passionate about an integrative model for physician-scientist training and is a very engaged advisor for MD/PhD residents and fellows interested in basic/translational science as part of their medical career.

Dr. Mark Friedberg, Director, Clinical/Education Track

Dr. Mark Friedberg is a paediatric cardiologist and senior associate scientist in the SickKids Research Institute, and a Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto.  His clinical and research interests are in ventricular function of children with acquired and congenital heart disease. In addition to developing and advancing the use of new echo technologies in clinical care, he also runs a translational research program focused on understanding mechanisms of ventricular dysfunctions in experimental models to discover new therapeutic approaches as well as potential novel biological agents for these difficult diseases. Dr Friedberg has been a strong advocate for a dedicated research/academic training framework for core pediatric residents and has developed novel curricula and tools which enable residents to experience research/academic opportunities early and throughout their residency.

Catherine Lim Shue, Research Education Program Coordinator/Office of the Associate Chair of Research

Catherine is a senior project coordinator for the Department of Paediatrics Research Education Program. She holds a BSc with a double major in human biology and psychology from the University of Toronto and has a passion for science and education. Catherine has leveraged her substantial senior administrative and project management experience spanning over 15 years at SickKids, to help advance strategic research education/training projects and initiatives within Temerty Paediatrics. Catherine has been a key player in developing the research in residency training curriculum and serves as coordinator and a key resource for the Transition Clinician-Scientist program and the Paediatrics Awards and Recognition Committee (ARC).
